A fractional CMO is one experienced marketing leader who owns your marketing for an agreed number of days a week. Companies choose the model for two reasons. The seniority is available in weeks rather than the three to six months a search takes, and the cost tracks the days used rather than a full-time salary.
The figures behind the decision are published. Excel Recruitment's 2026 Sales and Marketing Salary Guide puts a head of marketing in Ireland at €85,000 to €120,000 base, and a marketing manager at €60,000 to €80,000. On top of base salary sit employer PRSI at 8.9 percent, rising to 11.15 percent above the weekly threshold, pension auto-enrolment at a minimum 1.5 percent employer contribution since 1 January 2026, and a recruitment fee of 15 to 20 percent of first year salary. An SME head of marketing lands close to €120,000 a year all in.
Why the model grew
Marketing budgets got smaller while the work got harder. Gartner's CMO Spend Survey put B2B marketing budgets at 7.7 percent of company revenue in 2025, down from 11 percent in 2020. A smaller budget makes the direction of spend matter more than the volume of activity, and direction is a leadership job.
Ireland's market shape reinforces it. The Central Statistics Office counted 401,359 active enterprises for reference year 2023, published in December 2025, and 99.8 percent of them are small or medium sized. Most of those companies will never carry a full marketing department. What they need is someone senior enough to decide what marketing should do, then a small number of specialists to do it.
What a fractional CMO actually owns
The role is accountable for an outcome, not a document. Positioning, the plan, the channel mix, the website, content, lead generation, the suppliers and the reporting all sit with one person who attends your leadership and sales meetings.
That is the difference between this and a consultancy project. A project ends with a recommendation. An embedded leader stays in the business while the plan runs, adjusts it when the market answers back, and reports against pipeline rather than activity.
When the model does not fit
If you already have a capable senior marketer and simply need more hands, hire the hands. If you need a team managed full time in an office five days a week, hire full time. And if what you want is a written strategy with no ongoing involvement, a short diagnostic is cheaper and more honest than a retainer.
Where to go next
If the language you use internally is marketing director rather than CMO, the part-time marketing director page covers the same role in those terms.
